Of Interest: The structure running across the center of this image is the southern wall of the 190-kilometer diameter crater Stravinsky. Numerous small craters pepper the scene. One small crater in particular, near the westernmost extent of the image, appears to have some darker material streaming down the wall. That small crater is approximately 170 meters in diameter, which is slightly less than the length of two football fields.
This image was acquired as a high-resolution targeted observation. Targeted observations are images of a small area on Mercury's surface at resolutions much higher than the 200-meter/pixel morphology base map. It is not possible to cover all of Mercury's surface at this high resolution, but typically several areas of high scientific interest are imaged in this mode each week.
