Even though the MESSENGER spacecraft is years away from entering its final destination of orbiting Mercury, there is still much work to be done by the Science Team members. Before Mercury orbit insertion MESSENGER has multiple planetary flybys, which offer opportunities not only to collect scientific data but also to gain valuable experience in planning instrument operations. The plans and results are shared with the larger scientific community and the public through presentations at conferences and published articles.
