Of Interest: This NAC image of Derain exposes a closer look at its well known collar of Low Reflectance Material (LRM). However, this image also offers a close enough look to see small hollows on the crater's floor. Due to the angle at which this image was taken, it is also easy to see the topography in this area of Mercury's surface.
This image was acquired as a high-resolution targeted observation. Targeted observations are images of a small area on Mercury's surface at resolutions much higher than the 200-meter/pixel morphology base map. It is not possible to cover all of Mercury's surface at this high resolution, but typically several areas of high scientific interest are imaged in this mode each week.
